1950 ford 6 volt system with a positive ground with no spark ...?

i checked my coil and its getting power .. then checked my points, i get a spark when the ignition is on and touched with a screwdriver but when its cranked over im not seeing any spark at all from the points when its going thru its cycle of opening and closing . i know the gap is real close to being right so i should be able to see it spark right ?
 
make sure the wires installed to the points r not grounding out, u can have spark there at the points but they ground out during opening and closing i installed a set of points one time and this was my problem the same as to which u have
 
actually william yes alot of the old fords were positive ground

i know it sounds wrong /incorrect but they did this for many years and it is quite confusing


they did some real crazy things over the years with automobiles
 
You may or may not see the points spark - the best way to check the points operation is to put a 6 volt test light on the coil lead from the points and see if it blinks when the engine is turned over (it should be lit with the points open and out when the points close).
 
put a lamp in series with the coil, is the lamp on all the time? If so your points may be closed all the time...

If not, there probaly isnt enough travel to cause the points to close and complete the circuit. try making them closer together if not always closed...

make sure the spark plug output from the coil is not short circuited to earth, this will cause there to be no spark at the plugs... you can remove a plug and rest it on the chassis with a lead connected to observe if there is a spark occouring while cranking.
