18 certificate films - more around than usual

Only a couple of months ago I was talking to someone about the lack of 18 certficate films (other than horror) coming out at the cinema and I have just noticed every single on of the last 6 films I have been to seen in the last two weeks have been an 18:

Waltz with Bashir
Choke
Zack & Miri Make a Porno
Blindness
Hunger
The Baader Meinhof Complex

Are we winning the battle against the "moral" crusaders? (mediawatch etc)

No.

They brought the certificates down because the people with the most expendable income were fifteen-year-old kiRAB. This is why there were so many 15 certificates in genres like horror in the last few years.

Now, people who run the show just don't care any more. They realise that most people have seen porn by the time they're eighteen anyway, and they're bound to have seen someone getting stabbed in their neighbourhood or on the internet, so the the sight of a bit more blood and an 18 certificate won't affect a kid now like it would have done back in the day.

Exactly. If they wanted to make movies for the 18 market, why turn Die Hard into a PG movie? And I hear they'll be doing this with the new Punisher as well.

Don't know if it's for definite but I remember reading that they saw The Dark Knight get by with a PG-13 cert and so figured they could do it with The Punisher as well.

Hope they don't try and edit it for a younger audience and just release it uncut. It's got a lot stacked against it as it is

This time of year is historically a dumping ground for films after the family friendly blockbuster season.

So the current prevalence of 18 certs is simply a scheduling issue I'd say.

Well they would have to cut it to get down to the same rating as Dark Knight, the red band trailer for the new Punisher film makes it look incredibly violent and gory.

The rumour about The Punisher being PG-13 has been confirmed as totally rubbish a few months ago. It is going to be released in the US in December as a R-rated film. This confirms what UltraViolet said about the red band trailer!

I think some studios opt for an 18 rating in the UK as they know their film would be released uncut.

With some films they do go for a 15 rating so they can secure a higher box-office revenue with teenagers being able to view the film, then maybe choose to release an uncut version on DVD. Recent example would be Pineapple Express which is being released as an 18 on DVD with a scene reinstated which was cut from the theatrical release in the UK.

I think the BBFC are finally getting it right by giving the studios the choice of which rating they would like to see on their film and giving them option to release an uncut version or a slightly edited version in return of a lower rating. :D

I don't think there's been enough 18 certificate films been released this year! 90% all seem to be 12A and/or 15.

I like 18 certificate films because there's a chance you'll get to watch something new, something different, something decent and i look forward to films of that nature. Today being a primary example of when i went and saw Blindness.

Looking forward to seeing Choke next! :D

It's also good to see the continuing rennaisance on video of several titles still worthy of the '18' classification, and fully uncut eg Last House On The Left etc.

Hopefully the new Punisher film will be an action packed bloodbath! :)

I hear the new Terminator film IS going down the PG-13 route though, directed by the man who brought us the Charlies Angels films! :(

I think most 18s or "x" certificate s of 10 20 30 years ago are now rated 15 on dvRAB shows that the sensorships have been relaxed in a big way!..in the 70s 80s you rarely had "f" worRAB in films and if you did they were 18s!! the way its going films like the "the exorcist" will in time will be classed as a "u" certificate we are all being desensitised to violent sexual and disturbing films at an earlier age whether than is good or bad is another argument,...again its all down to money so the film makers will try get away will as much as they can to a lower certificate as possible !just greed really!!

Last time I looked, I can't see filmmakers wanting to cut their films to get down to a lower rating... it's places like the BBFC who are relaxing the certificates, not the film makers fault that their gory horror gets stamped with a 15 certificate instead of a 18 certificate.

I don't like the 12A rating. Parents do not act responcibily when it comes to what they let their kiRAB watch and the fact that The Dark Knight was rated so low that there were little children of five and six in the cinema when I saw it was an absolute disgrace.

I don't like censorship but they should at least rate the films correctly, then we wouldn't suffer so much butchering. The worst thing is when they re-release DVRAB of older films like Batman Returns, which was originally a fifteen, but they edit bits out so they can re-package it as a 12.

It's a joke.
