15 films. 3 slots. The Oscar for 2010's Best Animated Feature

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit how many of these films I haven't seen yet, so I'll just say that I agree with Cartoon Brew's comments on this story. It's a shame that there will only be three nominees this year and that most of the lesser known independent films will likely be crowded out. I imagine that many more people saw Secret of Kells (and many more theaters showed it) than would have if it hadn't been nominated for Best Animated Feature. It's possible that one of the smaller films could nab one of the three spots, but keep in mind that the members of the Academy have to actually see the films in order to nominate them and if the studios aren't pushing their movies, that's not going to happen.

Actually, Vikings raided/occupied Scotland for quite a while so the accent isn't entirely out of left field. It's a little odd sure, but historical Vikings also didn't wear horned helmets, had a love of hotsprings and bathing and... there's this weird thing where no one's seen something that can be classified as a fire breathing dragon flying around, nor any evidence that Vikings kept them as pets. :p http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikings

As far as the noms go, I'd say HTTYD and TS3, with one of the foreign films snagging the third nod.

TS3 will win for sure, mostly due to franchise clout, but HTTYD will sweep the technical fields. Toy Story 3 is a good movie, but the visuals were far from ground-breaking - in fact, I came away from it a little disappointed; I'd expected Pixar to really push the envelope on the final Toy Story installment.

Conversely, I stepped into How to Train Your Dragon not sure what to expect, and walked out of it foaming at the mouth with glee. *shrugs*

It wasn't really. I just think they handled the medium extremely well on this movie. I mean, I've seen people produce amazing digital paintings... only to be blown out of the water by someone playing around with crayons. Just because you HAVE all of the latest toys doesn't mean you can do anything noteworthy with them.

Toy Story 3 is the obvious winner this year unless the Academy decides they're not going to be snobs and just hand it the Best Picture award (chances: less than 1%), in which the Best Animated Feature can go to something else.

How To Train Your Dragon looks like it'll be Dreamworks' champion. Shrek Forever After and Megamind I don't see being pushed very much.

The 3rd slot is up in the air. It could be anything. Summer Wars or The Illusionist for the "foreign artsy" factor, plus to keep the nomination from being too CGI-dominated, both have a shot. Then there's Despicible Me which Fox is going to push HARD. The Illusionist's director snubbed the Oscars when his last film got nominated though so that might hurt The Illusionist's chances with the egomaniacal Oscar crowd.

EDIT: Now Cartoon Brew's comments are spreading rumors the Academy may expand the slots to five anyway. I'm confused.

EDIT 2: Never mind on the rumors, they've been disspelled by the source. Eee.

One final statement: I will admit I have bias towards Summer Wars and The Illusionist because I want the jaws of Pixar's and Dreamworks' executives to slam into the Oscar red carpet in the most comically epic fashion humanly possible.

While I agree with the skull caps and such, I still defend the fact they should not have Scottish accents. They may have well occupied, but I doubt seriously they actually learned a language. The point seems moot while discussing a fantasy cartoon though.

If there is any justice My Dog Tulip will get a nod. I doubt it but it was an outstanding film and proves that you could have an American animated film that is not a "family film" (nothing wrong with those but there's different types of stories that can be told with animation). I saw Secret of Kells because of the nomination and it was one of the most outstanding films I've seen last year. Disney and Dreamworks should not dominate the nominations.

BTW, how many people have seen My Dog Tulip?

3 slots for this category? Really? This will make a lot of fans of all of these films, some of which shouldn't have been nominated such as Cats and Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore (live-action/CGI) and Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue (which was straight to DVD/Blu-Ray), unhappy.

My Top III
:

1) Toy Story 3
2) Despicable Me
3) How to Train Your Dragon

I'm planning on it, but I don't believe it's come to my neck of the woods yet. A Oscar nomination would probably help a smaller film get into a few more theaters. At least, that was my impression of what happened with Secret of Kells.

You know what, who picks the members of the Academy, anyways?
They almost always pick Disney feature from year to year. Disney makes good good animated movies! :D
I would not be surprised if Toy Story 3 wins....it was a good movie, however I have not seen the others either to comment, so don't feel bad.

It was also implied there was a type mental or sound activated link. But when did the little dragons stop being afraid and figure out it was OK to rebel against their alpha? It never properly came across.

Chico & Rita should be given an Oscar place long before half of the drivel on that list.

Toy Story 3 and The Illusionist are the only worthy titles to be considered and i like Summer Wars, but it has no right being up for an Oscar at all.

Well my lovely i have no idea what schools teach you in history in your country, but Shetland and Orkney are Islands not mainland Scotland.

Its as bad as this one person that said it was fact that the whole of Scotland was occupied by the Romans.

or on other subjects The Rolling Stones are an American rock band

Wiki is the Devil of the internet.

Uh, how? The Academy has made more than a few questionable selections, so I honestly don't see anything wrong for Summer Wars being nominated.

And yet, oddly enough, it wasn't even submitted. I'm pretty sure it was screened in LA, so I can't help but wonder if there was some weird technicality that disqualified it.

Ha ha, please. They barely touched on Vikings, even though they shaped a lot of world events. Most of my "world history" was focused on the exploits of the Romans, and the Catholic church.

But, hey, they WERE in the general vicinity. It's certainly an improvement over the "every ancient race spoke with a British accent" rule that Hollywood likes to stick to.

Plus, if you think Wiki is the devil of the internet, you need to spend some quality time on 4chan. :p
