I'm not a big sports guy but I do like auto racing and a few other sports once in a while. I only watch HD and figured I might look into getting TSN HD......

I checked the new HD packages from EVu and it looks like for people that have the base package + 1 or so theme have to pay $13 (sports theme + HD sports theme) just to get one louse HD sports channel ?? What gives ?

Why do I have to buy a SD sports package that I'll NEVER watch just to get TSN HD ?

Am I reading that right ?

TSN can not be sold as a pick 'n pay, nor can TSN HD be sold without TSN SD.
I do believe that $13 is correct.

Actually you can pay the $8 for the SD sports theme plus $2.50 for just TSNHD, rather than the entire sports HD theme, so a total of $10.50. Probably not the answer you were looking for, but still better than $13.

On the old HD package it was a requirement that you suscribe to TSN SD to get TSN HD...

I'm looking at the current HD package and I don't see knowhere that is says you have to add TSN SD to get the HD

Sports 1 package is, as mentionned 8$ per month if you have less than 5 theme packs. TSN HD as a pick and pay could be bought for 2.50$

Since you already have 1 theme (if I understand your post correctly) and you would add a second theme (for a total of 16$ in theme packs) agent will probably suggest to throw in another 4$ and get 5 theme packs rather than 2 (5 themes are 20$)

The HD sports channels still require an SD sub to get the HD channel. Since two SD sports themes are required for all HD sports channels, the true cost for the HD sports theme is $12.50 to $21, depending on the SD and HD themes purchased. The cost for TSN HD alone is $7.50 to $13. I would like TSN HD but the cost with SD dependencies is too high. This is especially evident now that some US ISPs are offering HD only packages. When will Canadian ISPs follow their lead?

Double checked the brochure and there is a small 1 printed next to TSN HD and Raptors HD. On the other side of the brochure, in very small prints it says with a suscription to the equivalent numeric corresponding channel

Yes that is right. I only have the basic digital package + 1 theme (the one with FOOD). I never watch any SD unless I have to (like FOOD or HGTV). I just want to get one frekin sports channel for auto races (TSN HD) and have to get an SD theme to get the TSN HD. +$10.50 (8 for theme + 2.50 for the channel) for TSN HD is just not worth it. That just plain sucks.

Other than ripping off Canadians, do you see any reason they would require you to get the same channel in SD in a theme, that you really only want in HD ? Am I missing something ?

The required SD themes to receive corresponding HD channels is precisely the reason I'm leaving ExpressVU and going to cable subscription. I had enjoyed the ExpressVu for several years but the required themes etc. to access the HD has put it beyond "reasonable" for subscription.

See my "for sale" post in the appropriate forum for a good buy on some very good receivers. A 6000, 9200, and a 5900 are all offered.

i know...it sucks......if you have just the digital standard, you end up paying $12.50 for just tsn.......however, this isn't something that expressvu implemented, it's part of their contract with tsn......so if you want to get angry, i guess you need to talk to tsn....

This goes beyond just TSN. The whole BEV pricing structure is fixed to ensure the consumer is forced purchase more product that they want or need, an penalizes those customers who consume less. This penalty goes much beyond the normal "volume discount" deals.

I suppose that is one way to put it. Another way is good marketing strategy for the company. Certainly the number of satisfied subs greatly outnumbers the few dissastified subs who would still complain if getting it for free. Never did agree with the packaging but Evu is the option that I selected.

I would think there are more than just a few dissatisfied subs. Basically Bell and other providers have got the public by the proverbial you know whats. Its the same thing with Canadian Cell providers. If they get together and all agree to sc..w the consumer the same way, it does NOT make it legit.

I would very surprised if TSN manadated Bell to force consumers to subscribe to the same channel in SD just to get HD. This smells like pure Bell to me. Hopefully the new BCE head guy will talk some sense into the EVu management or sell it off to someone who is interested in growing the buisness by offering a quality product that people would gladly pay for rather than trying to figure out more clever ways to stick to the consumer.

Nah...
Finding "more clever ways" to rip you off will never go out of style. And this isn't BeV-specific.
But you are right, they all got the public for the proverbial...

When Look TV first came out (1999?) that was their edge over other BDU's: the customer being able to pick and choose what channels they wanted to watch and not have to subscribe to packages.

If I remember correctly they had only some channels available to pick and choose at $ 1.00 each. They were not even close to provide the number of channels that you can get from BEV. No HD and no PVR , I don't even know if they are still in business, maybe they are but there is not much interest in Look.

to be honest, Videotron and Star Choice also require you to subscribe to TSN/RDS (SD) to get the HD version of the channels.

@Bevfan:

Well, Videotron has an option where you can choose 20 or 30 individual channels for about 1$/each.
It's the only thing I like of Videotron, but it wasn't worth it to move away from Bell.
Now, Bell having that option would be nice though.

But imho, it has to do with the CRTC, 'cause looking at *Choice, they do offer similar programming (themes) rather than individual channels. Possibly a difference between cable&satellite regs. I can't see why Bev and *Choice wouldn't want this advantage over thew cable guys.

IIRC, *C includes TSN in their basic package and Rogers includes it in their tier 2 bundle that most people purchase as a minimum package. So purchasing an extra bundle is not necessary for those BDUs. EV currently has the most expensive cost structure for anyone who wants just one or two theme packs or just HD sports. For someone who wants 5 theme packs and HD, EV is not a bad deal. Otherwise, it misses the mark. It was a much better deal up until a couple of years ago.
