12" Kicker L5 smells like its burning with infinity amp...10 points for good answer?

Today i put in an infinity 1600 watt amp. pushes 400 RMS @ 4ohms and 600RMS @ 2 ohms. My woofer should easily handle the power as it is rated at 1200 max, 600 at 4 ohm RMS. I have it in a vented box about 2 cubic feet. The sub is brand new. amp is used but works perfectly. the amp barely even gets warm when I have it turned up so I dont think it is having to work very hard. What could be casuing this? is something wired wrong? I have the 2 voice coils in the sub running in series so i guess they are at 2 ohms. im pretty sure the wires are plugged into the amp at 4 ohm. honestly i am very confused and i really dont want to blow a brand new $150 woofer. help? thanks
