I have a 2000 Honda Accord v6 with 115,000 miles.
I get all of my work done at the dealership. This isn't for any particular reason, just force of habit. Ever since 80,000 miles, everytime I go (every 3 months for my oil change) they urge me to get my timing belt replaced or else it can do "extreme" damage to my car, and result in my having to replace the whole engine.
The dealership tells me it will cost about $1,000 total for the timing belt, but if I let it break before fixing it I'll be looking at about $3,000.
Is the timing belt a true concern, or a scam? What happens if I do not replace it, and instead allow it to "go" on it's own? Should I have it done at the dealership or have my local mechanic have a go?
Thanks!!
