1098 stalling problems

I'm having issues with stalling on the 1098. At first i thought it was a first time ducati rider error, but mine's stalled at the lights and in the car park.

I saw the previous posts and no one seems sure of the answer. ECM? Does anyone have a definite answer/fix?

Do a search there is a post about 250 replies long about it for more details. Short anwser is yes its a problem and yes your dealer should know about it.

Aas long as your ecu is good and your battery is good, I have posted the fix here already. If you missed it here it is again:

Call DNA and let them know you are having the problem.

1) Make sure the battery is putting out the correct voltage and wattage.

2) Re-set the TPS

3) Balance the cylinders to within .3% of each other.

4) Adjust the CO level in both cylinders to around 4.5%

This will solve your stalling problem. As Ducati gets word from its techs around the world that this is what is solving the problem they will probably issue a service bulletin.

I stayed up till 3 AM CDT reading the stalling thread. Thank you all contributors for all of the information you have communicated about this problem. And CAG, thank you for summarizing the steps which hopefully will alleviate the problem for most of us, until DNA comes up with their "official" fix.

One thing I want to point out to people who haven't been there yet, is that the "STALLING" thread can be found within the 1098 section of the "Specific Superbike" section of this very valuable website. I almost panicked this morning when I just went to this general Ducati forum area, and didn't see the "stalling" thread listed.

I will be riding later today, and I will post anything else I learn or experience IF it provides new knowledge. I will also be meeting with my dealer later today as well.

One final thought - maybe it is because I am older, but I cannot minimize the safety factor of this situation. I keep visualizing trying to walk my bike over to the side of the road when I can't restart it, and getting clipped by someody who comes roaring up on the right side to make a right turn. Or someone coming roaring up from directly behind, and neither expecting me to be stopped in the middle of the road, nor seeing me there as I try to restart my bike. If I was a DNA executive, I don't think I'd be sleeping very well until this problem is rectified.

Hi, I have been reading about this stalling problem lately. I have a deposit on the black S version which i should be picking up in the next couple of weeks. I was wondering if i should hold off till all of these initial problems are fixed. It doesnt seem that this is a big issue though, it seems that there is a simpl fix. so Do i wait or not. I t wil lbe my first duc...

I do mostly tack riding as i am a coach with nesba and race as well so this will be my first street and track bike combo in a while.... i just dotn wantto spend 20k to have issues then.....thanks for the replies

By waiting you will make someone very happy. There is a long wait list for the black 1098.

Since you do mostly track riding stalling at idle won't be a problem for you. If it does stall and your ecu is not bad, the fix is pretty easy.

CAG thanks for the reply.... i really dont want to wait.. but to clarify i do mostly race and CR... i also do private highperformance riding with classes with mike himmelsbach. we teach that at beaver run in PA..... THe duc will be more of a street bike though and an occasional track day toy... I have my race bikes and stuff for the track only.. I just wouldnt want to puch the duc tooo tooo hard and risk it on the track.. I mean dont get me wrong anything can happen at any time but i know me i always push the limits, lve dragging he elbows....
so wuld you say 8 out of 10 it is just to lean or a bad ecu? again i have the full termis coming with it with a new ecu do u think i will still have a problem?

thanks i just joined this forum and alreayd have foudn it to be helpful... thanks again

If you have the full Termis (70mm) not the slipons, you will have no problem. As far as I know, the stalling problems were limited to base models and those with slip ons.

With regard to the full system; I would be curious to know if you have the FULL full system or the 1/2 full system. Some folks were told to use one of the stock header pipes and one 70mm header pipe. This sounded quite strange to me, thinking why would one cylinder use a 57mm pipe and another the 70mm. Curiously, it was more than just one person that had this issue.

NO i have the full on race version.... complete exhaust, new ecu and fliter.... i called and spoke to the manager and asked him bout your previous post if he had heard anything.. he said as far as he knows the complete race kit is a full new exhaust etc.... hope that helps if u need me to ask anything else i will... oh and he know boutthe stalling issue and said ducati has been informed so anyone recieving there 1098s in the next couple months will more than likely not run into any problems and even if they do the new full exhaust ecu and fliter will get rid of it..

I had my 1098s fixed!! It was stalling at lights once it warmed up like most people have mentioned. It's not a problem limited to stock exhausts.

I talked to my mechanic and he said that they basically re-did the setup. The bikes essentially need to be tuned. They're set to run lean because of emissions. When they warm up (or sometimes not even), then tend to stall out.

The cam timing could be off, emissions settings might need to be adjusted (as mentioned by others), or; your ECU might be bad and may need to be replaced.
My dealer told me that if the bike stalls out again (after being tuned), they'll order a replacement ECU.

So there you go. That's what's causing the stalling;
poor setup of the bike to meet emissions standards.
bad cam timing setup.
bad ECU.

This isn't a 600 mile repair and can (and should) be done whenever you can get the bike to the dealership. It's a warrantied repair.

I hope that helps, puts a lot of owners at ease and settles the issue(s).
