1098 or RSV??? (oh! and hello to all, newbee here)

If Himmelsbach modified it it probably has 100mm pistons. The original big bore kits were not using the correct head gasket thus the problem you mentioned. OBTW a modified engine can hardly be used as an example for brand reliability. I also have a 03 Mille with engine work and have never had a problem. In the aggregate you have to say that Aprilias are a bit more reliable that Ducatis.

Not trying to start a internet battle here. I have and ride both brands and love each one for it strengths and weaknesses

You can put it anyway you want; while I respect your believes I would never buy an Aprilia when I have a Ducati as alternative. I have many examples of Aprilia's between friends and Internet "write ups" that testify the problems with those bikes.
Starting an internet battle? Why Battle?? you are saying your opinion and whether I like it or not it is just an opinion and needs to be respected as such. I do not get mad at people for stating their opinions, I may feel sorry for them at times but nothing more than that.

I too wouldn't use the Mod'ed engine as a baseline, and I appreciate your experiences with friends and what info you've pulled from the internet. All I can say is that I know lots of Aprilia owners...and have lots of experience with the bikes, in my experience (no opinion) they are incredibly reliable and as close to bulletproof as I've found. To the comment "I would never buy an Aprilia when I have a Ducati as an alternative", that's fine, but a bit odd. That statement implies that every Ducati is better than any Aprilia. I love my Ducati, and like I've said, the 1098 is on the top of my all time list. But, to say that every Ducati is better than any Aprilia....while I appreciate your brand loyalty, that doesn't pan out in the real world. There are positives and negatives to all bikes, although I must say that the 1098 is as close to perfection in a motorcycle that I've found. (my opinion)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

anyone with an open mind has, at the very least, my respect...there are weaknesses and strengths that all bikes possess...

the more important variable is the character/mind/heart/persona of the rider themself...and no one can really give great advice on the entire picture of the 'person" ...

interesting, even though i started this thread, only now can i see that other people's opinion is important as far as experience goes ...but it also does not mean a hill of beans as far as what is the best bike for ME...

and what the masses think is coo?...well, there are a plethora of examples in history where the "masses" consistently picked the inferior product...

Ducati - well, they're awsome...and they look sexy...and i likey-like
Aprilia - well...their awsome too...but they are different and more rare (not quite as rare as a $72,000 bike) but as a name brand...and i like them too

to be honest, i can't go wrong with either bike...hell, i may even pick the sv650 (not the climbing the rope in gym class feel...but maybe its the walking accross the balance balance beam at a 6 inch height)

peace, love, and merry holidays...oh! and happy jesus' birthday to everyone

When I said "I would never buy an Aprilia when I have a Ducati as an alternative" I stated an opinion of mine and I meant every word of it. I did not say that every Ducati IS better than every Aprilia; I said that I would chose ANY Ducati over ANY Aprilia as well as I chose the Desmosedici over any other Ducati's.
