103 Hard Starting PLEASE POST HERE

I had been fighting a hot starting problem on my '07 Ultra 103 Stage II since September 2007. No CRs. Really bad kick back. I tried the starting procedure of hitting run and then immediately hitting the start button. That worked about 8 out of ten times. Finally found what works on my bike. Every bike seems to be a little different.

1) Installed the SE Compensator.
2) Installed Harley HO 1.4kw starter.
3) Cranking Fuel Table SERT (reduced values in higher temperature range).

I've gotten the engine hot in traffic and shut it down with quick restart. Wait 5 to 10 minutes, then restart. Engine now starts instantly. I really think that the SE Compensator and Cranking Fuel table adjustment would have solved my problem. I only changed out the stock starter because I didn't trust it anymore after a couple years of hard starting duty. Another benefit of the SE Compensator is the transmission seems to shift a lot smoother.

Just my 2 cents. Hope this information helps somebody. Local dealers that I talked to about the hot start problem either said it was normal, blamed it on poor quality gas and were basically clueless about what to do to fix it.

I also have had this issue with a 103 build but I already had the MCR'S done at the time of the build.... and they did not help!
I ended up going with a Compu-Fire 1.6KW starter. That solved my problem but made the stock compensator sound like it was going to come out the side of the primary.
I have since replaced the compensator also and now the bike starts and sounds like it should. Too bad it cost me another $600.00 to get there and that was doing the work myself.

My bike is an 08 EGC. Last summer in Milwaukee I was starting my bike and a fellow biker was in the same lot as I started it. He heard the loud clanging and rattling and said it was my starter going.
I tried the quick start technique and it worked for a while but soon the starter was making all kinds of racket everytime i started the bike . Hot or cold ,,the noise was embarrassing.
I brought the bike to my dealer hoping that I would get there before the starter gave out. It was getting worse everytime I started the bike. They started it in the parking lot and immediately said the starter was bad. they said they end up replacing about 1/2 of starters after they do the 103 kits.
With the new starter I still get a loud clunknig noise once in a while but the starter just powers thru it. Hopefully this starter lasts longer than the original. Only time will tell.

The 07 police bikes were subject to a factory recall. You bike should have had the ACR heads installed during that campaign. But it had to have been done while the bike was under warrantee. Chances are your bike has already had them done.

After reading through this thread ... +1.

Starters may very well fail but the fact that stock 103s come from the factory with ACRs should be telling us something.

I had MCR's installed when the dearler did my 103 w/255's. The service writer recommend the MCR install, he said the moco recommended them with 103 kits with cam changes. I have no starting issues at all.
