I am having the same problems, I have an 09 ultra with the 103 kit and it is hard to start. The dealership kept saying that it was normal for the 103 untill I burnt up a starter at 8,000 miles. They put a starter on and then added fuel to my map at the cranking fuel. This seems to of helped a little bit but far from fixed it. I hope HD will do something to help.

Also inform your dealer to check service bulletin M1231 which applies to improper starter fasteners affecting all touring models which caused some to have starter problems.

Please let me know what happen with your problem because I have an 09 ultra with the very same problem and they can't give me an answer . Replaced two starters already going in for an SE starter.

I'm putting the parts together to do my own 103 upgrade. Found some used cylinders, heads, and 255 cams. In the process I came across a builder who is suggesting EASY START S&S cams. The more I research this, the better I like the idea.

I believe his is talking about the S&S 551 cams. Think I'll sell the used 255s and go with the easy start cams.

Have you guys seen the video on the S&S site? If not, google the site and watch the video.

Just my 2 cents.

Gee, good thread. I only wish I had this info several months ago before I did my 103/255 upgrade. I sure would have installed ACRs, but labor alone is about $450 to go back and retrofit the build. The dealer suggested heavy duty cables. The battery, connections, etc. have all checked out ok. At this point I plan on waiting for the starter to crater and I’ll replace it with the SE upgrade.

I had a 103 Stage II kit done on my '09 Street glide. Had some hard starting issues. I thought maybe a CR solution should be done. After selling the bike and now having a Ultra limited, I had the builder do a stage II type build on the bike. No hard starting issues. He claims it is the tune that accounts for hard starting and that compression release should not be necessary on that type of build.

I had the same issue with my 08. I had the dealer install the kit. Asked him to watch the clearance on the heads. I backed off the timing for start cycle, added fuel, etc. Finally put a cyclone starter on (1.4 kw), that fixed the problem.

This new bike, same build, you can bet I but the CR's on it. However, I've not experienced any starting issues with this bike. But, I hvae the CR's if it acts up.

I will put the cyclone starter on my bike at the first hint of kickback, but then I'll start using the CR's.
