103 Hard Starting PLEASE POST HERE

EG ULTRA CLASSIC, you are correct in the assumption that the small amount of aluminum from the drilled out part is expected to blow out the exhaust. If not, it's all under warranty, they can re-lick that calf and do it right the next time. The actual hole cut in the head with the drill used is less than 1/8", quite small, and every thing is done in stages to where the final cut actually cuts thru a very small amount of metal. Sounds like it will work, and I guess it does, they've done it many times before. 2.5 hrs labor plus gaskets for the rocker covers. I have a set of HD compression releases already if I decide to do this. The JIMS tool used to do the heads cost more than what the HD shop will do the job for. If I bought the tool and did it myself, I'd end up loaning it to everyone else at my expense!!!! so I just well let them do it! PACO

I really dont see what all the fuss is about aluminum pieces going thru the valves, unless the person doing the job is a hack using a dull bit and the wrong speed. A good machinist bit is razor sharp and will cut so the material shaving is one piece like a spiral, and the material will back out on the bit not fall in the hole.
If the hole is indeed only an 1/8", then that means you would use a bottom tap (for tapping blind holes), that means you could plug the 1/8" opening, then after tapping the hole vacuum it out before pulling the plug. Case solved.
For insurance I would us a vacuum hose in the spark plug hole when done

Good summary bagman. My vacume hose, though, is about 2", so, it ain't fittin in the spark plug hole for sure. I think the threaded portion of the CR's looked about 3/8" diam threads. So it is a several step process drilling the heads, then drilling larger, then drilling recess, then taping. I am sure you know what works best for you, though. Good Luck to ya and happy trails!

This really worked for me no bs, awesome. I will be sure to let my tuner know to add fuel at the cranking part of my map Thank you

I have an 08 electraglide . I did the 103 with 255 cams and SERT over the winter. When I first rode the bike after the conversion it was cooler out and the bike never exhibited any hard starting issues. It is warmer out now. Last week the wife and I were going to go for a ride. I started the bike and the kick back scared the ______ out of me. I read on this thread to try starting the engine as soon as you flip on the engine run switch. I have performed this new starting technique now about 40 times since that episode and it starts immediately,,,,just like it did before I did the 103 upgrade.

I am glad this works because when it kicks back it sounds like the engine is going to break something inside. It sounds hellish.

don't have to worry about kick bac/hard starting any more.

Great tip!!!!

My starter crapped out on me last weekend after a very hard life with all the hard start issues I had.

I upgraded to the 1.4 kw heavy duty starter and it is great. I highly recommend that if you have a starter being replaced under warranty to pay the difference in cost and get the upgrade.

By the way, last weekend I got a chance to get out and ride. Was about 90 degrees. Every time I started the bike after it had warmed up, I did the "treat it like a carbed bike" thing of cracking the throttle when I hit the go button.... never had any problems starting at all.... don't know if it will work for everybody, but I know how I will start my bike when it's hot from now on. Heck, it's the way I have had to start all my bikes before this one anyway. Now if this quits working......I dunno.

Mine is a very hard starter as well. I haven't had to have anything replaced yet (knock on wood) but I think that should be part of the install to either put in compression releases or a bigger starter.

I used the advice of starting the bike before the fuel light goes out , great tip.... 200 hundred miles yesterday .numerous stops, no hard starts. Not sure what this does, but it has worked so far. Harley service manager recommended a higher torque starter, dismissed the compression releases. I am going keep doing what I am doing. Who ever discovered the immediate starts worked ...Thanks.
