103 Hard Starting PLEASE POST HERE

OK gentlemen, now I'm worried. I just bought an 09 ultra and I had the dealer install the 103 Stage II kit w/255 cams, SE air cleaner and SERT + dyno. I am picking the bike up Friday. Does anyone know what percentage of bikes with this setup are experiencing this problem? Also, when you guys are claiming "hard start" does that mean it won't start or that the motor has to crank over more than normal?

That's a lame (attempt @ a) solution.

The stock starter starts my 10.5:1 HQ 120 just fine.

As is ALWAYS the case... ya gotta use the right stuff. In this case, compression releases are in order. As has been discussed in umpteen threads, tune has a BIG influence on starting too.

Proper tune + compression releases = easy starting & no hardware issues.

Fix the root cause and move on.

Hey PhilM, Good to hear from you

Let me tell you what the problem is in this area as much as I would just love to move on. I can not because my tuner has no clue what it means to move timing at the start area on the map. let me say again no clue...now I want to say this as politely as possible ~ Where in the heavens is the area on the map that identifies this part of the tune?

Otherwise my bike is rippen...love that HQ

Hey Paco, how did the dealer tell you he would catch the aluminum shavings from falling on top the piston when he drills the 1/8" hole thru the combustion chamber in the head? Maybe he figures they will blow out the exhaust valve when you first start-up. But, what if one little sliver shaving sticks to a valve seat?
I think the proper job would to pull the heads and drill in the special jig Harley sells the dealers to install them (Yeah, Harley already has the special jig made up to field drill the heads for the com rels.). Also, while the heads are pulled, Have them do a leak-down check on the valves. I had one leaking, and the tech ended up laping the valve seats.

Good luck to ya Paco, but if you can get out of there for less than $3 bills labour, you are cutting a fat hog!

oh and what if SOMEONE might POSSIBLY be just may be to lazy to look up the customer service number......not that ANYONE is, but just in case, what might that telephone number be?? I mean it only makes sense that somewhere in this thread somebody just might mention the number to call to talk to said MoCo about a certain problem...... ANYONE????

My 103 with Andrews 54h cam will backfire on hot starts 1 in 10 times locking the motor and making a hell of a noise at the compensator (in primary). The other 9 starts my motor will spin over easy with no problems.

HOGBAG

I have the same set up 103 with andrews 54H, also had some head work done. So far (250miles) I love it. Starts easy, even tried shutting it off hot waiting 60 secs and restarting to see if it hard started, nope, fired right up.

Real happy so far, anxious to get some miles on so I can get it dialed on a dyno.

mps

ok so obviously, NO BODY wants to help SOMEONE out and give up the Customer Service number........ OHHH if anybody rides this weekend that has had the problem and thinks to try to crack the throttle when you crank... let us know if it works..... I'm not going to get a chance to ride any this weekend..

The only number for HD customer service is 414 343 4056.

I have the dealer installed 103/SE255 kit and have the hot hard start problem. The dealer replaced the starter clutch about 2000 miles after the upgrade and it helped for a few miles, but it's back now. I've tried the quick start procedure and it helps some times. I'm going to call cust. service and bitch. I know it won't help but will make me feel better before spending another $800 for releases.

Lame? A solution is a solution. Because it's not your solution doesn't make it lame.

Read what you're saying...............proper tune + compression releases = easy starting.........

I could just as easily say that compression releases are "lame," but I'm not that frigging ignorant.

As I said earlier, a high compression/high performance motor doesn't need compression releases as evidenced by the fact that they don't exist in the automotive world. I suppose you'd suggest I add 8 compression releases to my low 11-second street-driven 'Vette so I can turn it over with a weak-assed starter like the H-D factory one. Yeah, I'll get right on that.

I'm glad your compression releases work for you, but they're not the only solution nor necessarily the best one. They're the 'generally accepted' answer for motorcycles only because of the limited space available for a decent starter on a bike frame.

A lot of people here could stand to be less dogmatic and more open-minded to ideas/answers that aren't theirs.
