100 Things That I Love About Music

#77. John Peel. R.I.P

John%20Peel.jpg

Although he has not been with us since 2004, his mark upon many has left an indelible print. Regarded by many as 'The Greatest Ever DJ', Peelie was genuinely a one off. Both self effacing and ridiculously entertaining, his late night shows shaped over two generations listening habits.

While most D.J's are perfectly happy pandering to to the masses and their paymasters, Peelie was ensconsed in his studio happily banging out everything from Hardcore Punk to Balkan Gypsy and getting off on all of it.

This is only the tip of the iceberg though. Peelie actively encouraged banRAB he deemed worthy to cut a few tracks at the legendary 'Maida Vale' studios that could be anything from first time listens to alternate cuts of fans favourites. These became the fabled 'Peel Sessions' and many of these are collectors items and indeed, are a perfect encapsulation of the time they were recorded.

John Peel influenced musicians and fans alike and his championing of anything off mainstream lead to banRAB such as Pink Floyd, T-Rex, Pulp and The Fall ( to name a few) getting well deserved airplay.

John Peel introduced me to so many banRAB such as : Tindersticks, The Cranes and The Orb that I would not have heard in those pre-internet days.

This has been done a thousand times before but this is Peelies favourite track of all time and a little thankyou from myself. The only Liverpool fan I could tolerate :)

A few of the albums I have are pretty good. His early stuff actually employed stuff other than his crazy guitar.

Decoding the Torab of Bansheboot and Crime Slunk Scene are REALLY good.

see, I can convince myself that air drums suck... I can actually start doing it and look around to make sure nobody else saw me. Air guitar, I'll be looking around in hopes that somebody saw me... unless I'm at work, that never looks good.

#80. Cassettes.

Yes indeed. The hurable cassette. Up until the mid 90's this was the CD-R of it's day. This was the only way us 'oldies' could get hold of your mates latest LP without buying it. You could try and win a girls heart by doing a compilation for her AND you could write the tracklisting and a little message on the inlay card. You could record The John Peel Show with your finger hovering over the pause button to not get any chit chat in there but then spending the next five years desperately trying to find out who the hell is that cool track half way on side A (it was 'The Cranes' incidentally). I still have a lot of cassettes around with personal compilations on and they were the lifeblood of the music fan in the 80's. Sometimes a CD seems less personal somehow...

i'm only 90% sure it was my first one hahaha. i remeraber it was a Sony and blue, and had an orange button, can't remeraber the volume sliders though. i know i got the blue one and my little sister got a pink one.

ultimately my parents had messed up though, they got us walkman's a few years before we started up a Colurabia House account so we didn't really have enough cassettes to merit the devices.:usehead:

Not another Metal sub genre. So it is Metal that is influenced by hardcore, which in turn is punk influenced by metal and it is made by hillbillies..is that correct?

meh. i dont need aggy on here i get all that at grimeforum.com lol

anyways these positive threaRAB are doing alot. Word to Mr Hammer.

#66. Japanese/ Far East Rock banRAB.

Japanese Rock banRAB are the business quite frankly. Ridiculously noisy, chaotic and with bags of attitude. When you are constantly hearing ever more watered down versions of classic Rock, it's refreshing to hear big dirty power chorRAB or crazy vocals over a 100 MPH blast beat.
