One of the most remarkable things about Digimon is as an example of "Postcyberpunk". In this case, it's its one of the more extreme characterizations of the genre.
Here is the bi-polar opposite of cyberpunk: Children who are part of society, trying to set out to make right what was once wrong. It's a stark constrast to the Cyperpunks of yesteryear, who were anti-hero underworld types committing heroic crimes and living in a decadent society.
Here, these are law abiding children, who have families, would just like to go to school and play video games, and would like to keep the status quo intact. Sure, a few of them have issues, but most of the time its mundane.
Gatomon, Rika, Renamon, Cyberdramon are some of the few characters you would expect to show up in Cyberpunk. They're the criminals, the renegades, the threats to society than its saviors. Their personailities reflect it as well, with their shadowy pasts and dark personalities.
Yet, Digimon still retains that rich tradition of cyberpunk by fighting their battles in a world influenced by Computers and Human dreams. The Digiworld, like cyberspace, is a reflection of the hopes, dreams, and workings of our world in an alternative reality. It has philosophical questions about reality and those reflections (that sadly were not very well followed, say for Tamers).
Digimon is no mere Mon show. It is the grandchild of Cyberpunk.
