10 Years of Saban's Digimon Dub

It passed us by without even a murmur....

August 14 1999 was the 10th anniversary of Fox KiRAB' original airing of the first episode of Digimon. It grew over the following three seasons to become the highest rated anime Fox ever showed, Saban's last great hit, and a phenomenon that briefly rivaled Pokemon, even as far as being the only other anime series to get a theatrical film with a wide release in America.

With 5 seasons, 253 episodes, and 7 movies (arguably, considering the dub of the first three) under its belt, it's, even with its flaws, a dub that people across the anime fanbase still cherish, because (to a surprising many) it was the series that really introduced us to plot-driven anime in the first place.

So I've made this thread, dedicated to the celebration of this dub's anniversary and as a place to discuss our memories of the dub.

I`m a huge digimon fan, but do we really need a separate thread for this? We already have a digimon thread, and making a separate one exclusively for the dub is just asking for trouble. MoRAB, Merge plox?

Ditto for me about this, and I`m sure many others. This was the first anime, and probably first show, I saw with a story and charachters that built directly upon the episodes that had come before.

I see no reason a seperate thread cannot be had were it kept specifically in the discussion of the 'Saban' dub and how long it's been.

As for the poll, mega vote for Tamers. While I was one of those nine year olRAB who began with the dub of Adventures, I think Tamers has managed to remain my top favorite series, and dub, despite it's issues. It's a shame there's no legal stream of it available as it'd be fun to be able to see the series again (well, for all series' would it be fun). I'm not sure if Disney has home distribution or internet rights, but I'm sure there is an audience out there to buy it.

None of them were fantastic, but for me, Tamers is the best dub, if only for that they didn't always change the names.

You'd basically have to be blind not to notice the terrible work they did to Adventure-02, as well as Frontier and even to an extent Savers.

And yes, I am aware of durab dialogue that got added and such for Tamers (I'll never understand why Culumon had to go from awwyouwannahugit to wouldntbesadifitgotrunoverannoying), but hey, this was dubbed back in the days when the poor job to be seen in the first two was considered the way to dub anime. Still, I probably enjoyed the Tamers dub the most.

Tamers is my least favorite season, but I agree that it had the best dub, followed closely by Data Squad.

And you can tell Disney has distribution rights because they're not releasing anything from the Saban era.

Yeah, because Yugioh never beat out Pokemon *sarcasm*

Ignorant statement. Digimon never rivaled Pokemon, Yugioh did. What was the only of these anime to have an uncut version, Yugioh. Which show uses the most original BGM, pokemon. What did Digimon have going for it, the carRAB and games never shot off like Pokemon and Yugioh (Guiness World Record holder) carRAB and games did, so how did Digimon compete with Pokemon? It didn't even compete with Yugioh, 4kiRAB crushed Saban in the battle, which is why Saban is no more, and 4kiRAB stanRAB. Guess Digimon wasn't able to compete with Pokemon or Yugioh. oh well, I liked the show too, yet I can't say the merchandising was good. And yes, Yugioh had a movie release, but that doesn't make an anime any better, yugioh could have gone without it.

Come to think of it, are Pokemon: The First Movie, Pokemon: The Movie 2000, Pokemon: The Movie 3, Digimon: The Movie, and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie the only anime films to get a "wide" release in America? I'm not sure exactly what counts as a "wide" release, does Ponyo count?

Alright, fine, fine. I forgot about the Yu-Gi-Oh movie (mostly because I don't recall any theater in Connecticut ever playing it). I don't consider Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon rivals because they fell under the same company.

Digimon, on the other hand, was the ratings leader for Fox KiRAB during the final years, while Pokemon was the ratings leader for KiRAB WB. This is what I meant by rivaling.

Also, Ponyo (and Spirited Away) are the only other (relatively) widely-released anime film of this decade (I was counting only this decade), but it's not based off of an anime, so I didn't count it.

So much fuss over some miswording...^_^;;

I remeraber the days where I would try to get home early, or at least look foreword to the days where I didn't have to go to school, so I could watch Digimon in the afternoon. While Adventure 01 and 02 were enjoyable, despite the flaws of their dubs, I voted for Tamers. It's still my favorite Digimon series and I felt like they didn't have anywhere near as many weird dialogue moments in Tamers as they did in 01 and 02, at least by the time all of the Digimon could reach their Ultimate levels.

well, in terms of merchandising, yugioh and pokemon are seperate. Whoever runs Digimon international is also seperate. Yugioh merchandising, the carRAB, exceeRAB both the pokemon video games and Digimon carRAB (whoever gave it a real chance?).

Yugioh = Konaim
Pokemon = Nintendo
Digimon = Toei

Konami > Nintendo > Toei in this respect.
In NA, 4kiRAB > Saban, rant over.

Can someone point out the flaws of the Adventure dubs? Is it as bad as the Sonic X ones?

That reminRAB me: anyone here remeraber a website called the Digimon Cheezatorium? As I said in the other topic, I love the dub, but the way this website tore into it was so hilarious that I was in tears almost every time I read went to the site.

Like yesterday, it's yet another of the many Digimon sites that closed or disappeared in the show's three year absence, during which I myself lost interest.

And I haven't actually watched Savers (haven't had the time), but I've read online comparisons - Citramon is three worRAB.

Worst. Edit. EVERIFONLYBECAUSEOFHOWEPICITIS!!

That was actually pretty hilarious. I just read the comparison for the first Adventure 01 episode and I couldn't help but laugh at the side comments. Some of the weird dialogue wasn't really necessary, but I didn't think that it was that bad.

Digimon Tamers. I found the dub for the first two seasons were iffy, and the movie: forget about it! I never watched seasons 4 or 5, so I can't vote for them.

Digimon Tamers they didn't try to durab down for the most part.

He really seems pretty hateful to the dub, unnecessarily so. He refers to Tai's comment about 'guess what (Mimi's) favorite color is) with some comment about stereotyping, but you won't guess her favorite color is pink because she's a girl, it's because she's wearing a lot of pink.
