Swing music (which is also called Swing Jazz) finds it routes in Jazz music. Swing first became known in the US in the 1920s and it wasn't until the mid 1930s that it had really become established here. Swing music has a strong rhythm, is usually performed by the double bass and drums and is played at a fairly quick tempo. It has a very particular rhythm and this style has transcended other types of music.
Swing music started to become less popular during the period of WWII for several factors. At this time it obviously became difficult to maintain "big band" because of the fact that a lot of the bands members were overseas fighting in the war. Also, the cost of touring with a large band became impossible due the lack of funds during the war time period. For these reasons a smaller musical group of either 3 or 5 players were more usually seen. Another reason for the decline of the big band at this time was the recording bans that came into place due to musicians' union strikes. One year in the 1940s, there were no records made legally in the whole of the country. However, independent labels continued to produce music in small batches. This ban was lifted in the early part of 1949 and by then swing had changed with many new styles having emerged.
Glenn Miller is a very well known swing artist. He was an US jazz musician plus bandleader during the music swing era. Miller became one of the best-selling artists during the period 1939 to 1942, whilst leading one of the most famous "Big Bands". However, whilst travelling to entertain American troops during World War II, the plane that he was in disappeared in bad weather. Miller's body was never found. His recordings are still favourites, even to music lovers born years after Miller's death.
