10 dollar data required for verizon lg env3?

i was told in order to get the env3 i had to get a 10 dollar data plan for email for the phone. i dont need email. so do i really have to get it or not?
 
well knowing verizon that is a yes they will tell you it is necessary to get the entire experience for your device and in some way they will tie it into the data plan and make it seem like they are doing you a favor. i would visit the store and maybe talk to a manager and ask,
