I follow the instructions from my service manual to the T and I can't loosen the jam nut under the derby cover. The clutch plate turns with the nut. The bike is on the lift, in neutral, and the wheel doesn't turn. Am I supposed to block the clutch plate?

I put it in gear. Then give the ratchet handle a good pop with my hand. Sometimes have to put my foot on the wheel but you could lower the bike until the tire is touching the ground.

There should be an allan wrench place in the shaft. That's how you are supposed to hold it. Use a box end wrench to turn the nut. Mine was too tight last time. I had to have a nut welded to a socket to get it loose. The last guy (at the Harley shop) had rounded the nut so it was not coming off easy.

Put the bike in gear w rear wheel on the ground. A good snap of the rachet will break it free. Torque it to spec when you retighten it. It is hard the first time

I tried everything to get mine loose the first time. Read somewhere (on here, or in the manual) DO NOT use impact wrench! Well in a perfect world maybe! The impact wrench worked like a charm!

Yup, it worked! I put the bike in 1st gear and left it on the lift. Gave the wrench a good snap and it loosened the jam nut. I don't have an impact wrench but my long Craftsman torque wrench did the trick. Oh and I bought a 11/16" deep socket at ACE Hardware for the job. 5 bucks well spent.
I was expecting the service manual to tell me what tools were needed but there no such thing in it. Oh well .........
Thanks to all for your help. My clutch used to jerk/lurch in low gears after the bike was already in motion. The clutch adjustment solved the problem. I have 9,600 miles and never touched the clutch basket until today.
