'07 Idle Issues

I had my ECM flashed with the update 2 days ago. My stage 1 download was eliminated with the reflash. I didn't want (or need) to pay the $200 to put the stage 1 download back in since I've got the PCV w/autotune. I tweaked my idle settings slightly, road the bike now for about 170 miles with a variety of conditions (hwy and in town) and so far, the problem has not reoccured. My TPS (throttle plate adjustment) is at .573 volts after I adjusted it last weekend so that was spot on prior to the reflash. While I was at it, I cleaned out the IAC valve port w/carb spray and cycled the ign. switch 3 times and road the bike. It still acted up which is why I decided on the reflash. I'll keep you all posted.

Yes, please keep us informed. Did your receipt show any identifier for this re-flash? I'm still trying to get a grip on it, and will quiz my local HD folks either today or tomorrow about it.

I don't know if this is a coincedence or not, but, after a 30 minute mixed ride (highway, stop & go) today I parked the bike in my driveway. Went out an hour later and she wouldn't start! Turned over, had a spark, plugs were normal, just wouldn't catch - nothing. Took both side covers off and looked for loose connections, nothing. Pulled every fuse, all ok. Pulled the Maxi-fuse (finally found out where it is) and left it out, while I disconnected my positive cable at the starter, to check for a loose connection (per service manual), seemed fine. Put the Maxi-fuse back in, hit the starter, and she fired right up? What gives? Seems like I reset the ECM? Rode it for 2 hours after, not a glitch? Idle was fine throughout. Any ideas?

Another 80 miles, mix of fast hwy speeds and in town. All around, bike runs better. What I noticed before, when it would act up, other symtoms would occur. It would pop through the exhaust more under decel and throttle application was a little off. Everything is way more consistant now. The part No. on the flash is 32852-07. The calibration ID is 32903-07E. Description: Stock United States, to be used with ECM's labeled 32852-07 or 32534-05B or greater. Hopefully this helps.

That helps a lot! Note that the re-flash and one of the ECM part numbers are the same (32852-07). My ECM is 32534-05B according to my parts manual.

I asked the service writer at the local HD shop today and as I expected he knew nothing about anything after the "torque-smoothing" re-flash of late-'06. I'll throw the calibration ID number at them and try to get in touch with a trusted tech I know. Will report back.

Edit: I just got an email from my tech and he said this re-flash would fix the problem. I'm going to give HD tech support a call Monday and double-check it all with them, as I don't want to re-flash unless it will address the idle issues. The bike idles great 95% of the time at idle and 100% of the time above idle and I don't want to jeopardize the positive aspects of the status quo.

If that's the torque smoothing map from late 06 it's going to mess with your PC map. Even on stock bikes there were less than positive reports back then. It had nothing to do with idle problems.

NO, that's not the case. Sorry about the confusion but I was discussing the high idle problem that I had before the second ECM reflash.

So far, it's been running great with no high or low idling problems. I've also noticed less burbling when I'm using engine compression to slow me down.

The dealer checked with HD first and was able to do the troubleshooting, voltage adjustment and re-flash at no cost to me even though it was way past its warranty period. He was mentioning to me when I left it off that HD may cover costs under the engine emissions' warranty sometimes and I guess it must have worked in this case.

Your report is very helpful. I tried to discuss this with HD customer support and got nowhere, telling me I need to contact my dealer. The problem is the dealer is clueless and they don't even know about this reflash.

Nevertheless, I've made an appointment for Wednesday AM. They told me the emissions warranty is only 18k miles, and I'm way over that at 37k. I'll report back after that experience.

I did the re-flash yesterday but haven't ridden the bike enough to make a report on any improvements. I'll try to get out tomorrow for a test-ride. Here are some interesting facts you should know on these two re-flash versions, however:

34412-07D: This is what has been in my bike since Sept. '08, and is the only version that enables EITMS.

32903-07E: The newest flash version, but EITMS will no longer work as it did with the above. I can live without it since it almost never activated on the road anyway.

My tech wasn't so high on the reflash fixing any idling difficulties as he suggested in his email the other day. He thinks my particular problem is the IAC motor. I cleaned my butterfly assembly with brake cleaner and sprayed some into the IAC orifice both while the bike was running and later while activating the kill switch with ignition switch on.

If this doesn't fix my problem the next step for me will probably be to replace the IAC motor, unless someone comes up with a magic bullet between now and then. It's not an expensive part ($44 MSRP, $29 from Zanotti's) and doesn't look difficult to replace.

BTW, the reflash was free at my dealer.
