Buy a 90's miata for 1k, rebuild the bottom end, throw a huge turbo or s/c at it... You can buy new or newer if you want but the insurance will be higher and the performance isn't much better unless it's a mazdaspeed.

When you say easy you mean cheap. Replacing valve springs is generally not cheap. You could swap the head and I would suggest it if you've been running around with this problem for a while. I'm not sure about this diagnosis...I think the problem you're describing could also be the lifters...

There is no such thing as "back round" knowledge about cars. Go to the library and check out a chilton manual for a common (preferably 4 cylinder) car, then read it and understand what it's saying. But realize you'll only learn by doing.

To answer your question...you need a second car or just buy the part prior to pulling the old tranny. They don't let you do actual repair or maintenance at a junkyard. In all honesty it doesn't sound like you're going to be able to do this without help but still I wish you good luck.

Yes. But you have to get it from the dealership, they will take measurements, and they are special order but no charge. Sounds bad but it's to minimize injury during impact.

O2 sensor socket and a breaker bar.

I'm not a corolla expert but I don't believe it has a tranny dipstick most modern toyotas have a sealed transmission...basically there's a drain plug and that's it.
