It is used for starting when engine is cold. Start it, run it for 30 seconds or so, turn it off. Worse case, if you leave it on too long, you foul the spark plug. No serious engine damage.

You gotta rock it back and forth to engage low/high range. When you start it, as LONG AS IT IS IDILING normally, it will jump a bit but should not take off as long as clutch was installed correctly.
