I'm very sure that the mother cat will come back for the kitten. Our neighbors found some newborn kittens in their yard. Then the mother took them away one by one.
Cats hate sprinklers! So maybe you could put sprinklers in or around your garden. Did you try that stuff you sprinkle around your garden to keep animals out?
