the bellhouseing is made on the trans ,so you have to pull it back to get to the slave cly. clutch doesn't have to come off , but if it has a lot of miles on it this would be the time to replace it.

Take a look at the heat shield around the Cat,they rattle sometimes and when they heat up noise goes away

check the connection on the VSS( speed sensor) ,its on the back side of the trans. if the computer doesn't read the speed it will not shift,

sounds more like you need your carb rebuilt an maybe a good tune up
