Actually, something like this isn't bad to get on eBay. Backdrop stands are pretty low tech, not much to goof up although they do come in differently qualities. Cloth backdrops are also available there. Narrow muslin (like 6x9 feet) is fairly inexpensive but really designed for portraits...
