Well, broadening horizons to include shows from all over the world, as opposed to just American and few specific genres of Japanese cartoons, would give people exposure to more influences, and more influences could mean higher quality American animation.
When Pirates of Dark Water was just Dark Water, Roddy McDowell voiced Niddler. When they made it a tv show instead of a miniseries, Frank Welker took over and they redid the first five episodes with him.
Katara's character in the beginning, while stereotypical for female characters in an action show aimed at boys, was alright. She had a realistic balance between her usefulness and her strength. She maybe got in one good slap with a water whip to a random pirate in an episode, but Aang ended up...
I have no shame whatsoever. Like others here, I have a few animated shows/movies on DVD (though DVD collection is more 50-50). Just about everyone I talk to in "real life" thinks cartoons are universal, and talk about/watch 'em whenever they can.

I agree with Cartoonlover. Saturday morning cartoons won't become extinct, its just where to find them will be different. Kids would watch them on cable channels instead of broadcast channels.
