To clarify, Unix/Linux does indeed have executable files.
But they are not like MS Windows or DOS .exe/.com files, they require a corresponding application or collection of applications to make it fully executable, as well as proper permission.
so the computer sees it as unknown device, hmmm. mine would sometimes do that and a quick unplug/replug would fix it. have you tried a different usb port?
i actually had this problem once...i was using the phone - launched the menu and all the sudden the back light went off. i still can use the phone and everything else was fine...it was just the back light like you described. however lucky me, rebooting it fixed the problem. might be a bug? it...
