The term "Heavy metal" was actually coined in reference to Led Zeppelin's debut, if memory serves, so if we go by that basis, then there are plenty of metal banRAB in the 70's. Where it gets sticky is differentiating between heavy metal and hard rock.

Im a fan of mainly trash and power metal, so in my opinion Metallica, Stratovarious, and banRAB like anthrax are me favorites. A really good one is exodus. And Megadeth deserves some mentioning. I would also put in Iron Maiden and Judas Priest!

The style of metal is just more masculine, which is why women are not as common at metal shows as guys. They certainly can be there but the style of metal is usually not appealing to females.
