I'd also place a vote for the E815. I have used Samsungs exclusively in the past (though only with Sprint) and first looked at the 950 when switching to Verizon. It is a bit smaller than the E815 but IMO, the difference is negligible. I was a big fan of Samsung UI on the Sprint phones but...
IMO, by far the most difficult part of disassembly is removing the front cover. Since I do not have an SRT-6 (guitar pick), I used a fake credit card to pry up the cover around the edges. In the end, the credit card was bent to hell.
The rest is easy!
Im using a Linksys WRT54G and a Belkin USB adaptor.. connects just fine with no security, however setting any kind of encryption causes "limited access" or no connection in some cases.. thinking Vista and Linksys encryptions are not compatable..
