Is there any such units to avoid? Any such units to seek out more than others? I'm thinking of one with automatic (non-dedicated) as well as manual controls.

A 35mm camera refers to the film. That's what a sure shot is, 35mm. The 38mm on the front is the lens focal length. So it is a 35mm camera. The best thing to do is ask the instructor.
