The effect is not limited to 4. I run beryl, which is practically the same thing as compiz, and you can set the number of desktops to as much as you want (Im not sure what the limit is). When you do, obviously you wont get a cube. You'll get a hexagonal 3d fig if its 6 desktops and so on. Tbh...
