People now are used to big fight scenes and CGI effects. In a way LOTR is partly to blame, as everyone expects that every film should have this level of action and effects, and If a film is as long as LOTR but without this staple requirement, then people get bored.

The only one I have seen is where a 1950's American car is haunted and goes on the rampage. That was quite spooky and tense. I think it was called Matilda.
