the Cranes do a wonderful cover of Happy Christmas (War is Over). it's a pretty obscure track though, it was only released on a weird compilation album called O Come All Ye Faithful: Rock for Choice. last year Flaming Lips put out a 7" with Silent Night and It's Christmastime Again. good stuff...

It wasn't compression. They pushed the volume of the mix to maximum levels before they mastered it. The lead engineer said when he got the tracks they were already fucked over and he couldn't do anything to clean them up.
