If you can get to the recovery console, have you tried just wiping the phone completely? It sounds like a hardware problem more than a software, but I've been wrong before.

FWIW, the Mp3 player on the v3m isn't a true MP3 player. At least on USCC it's not. With the VZW User Interface, it may not even have that capability. I can't say for sure, as I used the v3m on USCC, and only had one on VZW for a day or two at best and didn't get to look around it very good...
