Barney The Dinosaur was dark compared to the travesty that is Schumacher's movies.

It's likely to be made, but not until the Wolverine and Magneto movies are. Halle Berry has said she believes, and hopes, it will be made, whereas Hugh Jackman doesn't think there should be. Despite the events of X-Men 3, it has deliberately set up the possibility of an X4.
