I say it depends on the type of cartoon. A comedy one like Family Guy and the Simpsons runs dry due to lack of jokes (something South Park hasn't suffered from), while serious shows like BTAS can run on longer as long as the plot can extend well enough.

I dunno if Chung even liked it (he only did the designs, nothing else to do with the content). It seems The Animatrix gets a lot of hate. I personally thought parts of it were better than any of the LA movies. Also Looney Tunes: Back in Action was pretty clever.

When creators attempt to make more adult oriented fare, it doesn't always provide the neccessary response(read: profit) that kiddies do. Look at most of the animated trailers for animated movies. There may be one or two clever jokes or pieces of dialogue, but most of the is burp and fart jokes...
