Fixed it. panic over. It was not an app after all, (I had uninstalled the one I though the icon in the status area was for). It was a folder organizer shortcut I had created with a 'notification' label associated with it. when I deleted the shortcut it removed from the notification bar.

I had the same problem. Are you sure setting it to "use SSL if available" isn't falling back on an insecure connection when it sees the unverified cert? I'd like the option to add the self-signed cert as well (and force the SSL connection) as that would be a lot more secure than connecting to...
