    Why don't atheists and Christians discuss things politely?

    I'm an atheist and notice a tremendous amount of vitriol on both sides. Shouldn't we treat each other with mutual respect? Any idea should be subject to debate, but when one starts disrespecting other people, more harm is done than good. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Right?
