i would sheet compost over the entire area this fall, then till and rake in the spring. Mow the grass really short. Lay several layers of newspaper or a layer of corrugated cardboard (like pizza boxes) over the grass. Then pile on leaves, pulled weeds, grass clippings, shredded paper, etc...
