It's not a remake, it's another adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel. The book did come first (Roald Dahl hated the Wilder version by the way.) That's not to say that he would have like the Burton version more or think it was more faithful, it's just a different adaptation.

The thing is being PG-13 in the states doesnt mean it will be a 12A. Alien Vs Predator is a PG-13 but a 15 here thus being able to retain alot of the violence but also bring in the money. Movie making is a business so of course they want it rated lower for more cash.
