It really doesn't make a difference. If I were you, I would just run six gallons of whale water, and put them in the room where you plan on placing your fish tank, and let them get room temperature. I see no harm in doing that. Thats what I do with all three of my fresh water aquariums!

Those sound good to me. However, the 1-inch-per-gallon rule is NOT an old wives' tale. After fish get more than about 5 inches, the rule becomes exponential (the fish become thicker and taller, not just longer)!
