I wouldn't say you NEED it. It may be handy. But people have been camping for a lot longer than GPS has been around. Good map reading skills are probably important though, if you have no GPS. And are probably worth having even if you do have GPS.

There is no such thing as a 100% reliable test for anything. And with symptoms, there are things they usually mean, but the body is a complicated thing and sometimes symptoms are misleading. For example, toothache being a symptom of a heart attack.
