An EQ increases or reduces various acoustic frequency bands to suit your tastes and acoustic environment. It DOES NOT amplify (increase volume) if it is strictly an equalizer. Strictly speaking, an amplifier simply increases the power of whatever signal is fed into it. Both are desirable.
