i would start by figuring out why its running bad. the gears jerking is probably caused by the engine running bad. you should have someone look at it. its probably not worth putting a new engine in it. but it might be worth fixing if it can be done cheap. i wouldnt put to much money in it though.

the fuel pump is in the tank attached to the sending unit. i would check the fuel return line on the top of the sending unit. there might be a small leak from when the pump was changed. there are probably vents and evap lines there as well. i would check them for leaks as well.
