Is there a library or a bookstore in there somewhere? In the Sims 2 for PC to learn new recipes a Sim must buy the recipe books at the bookstore and read them to learn them. (I just read that you can get the recipe books at the culinary store? Maybe that's what you are looking for.?) :)

Is University the only expansion you have besides the base game? If it isn't then install your other expansions, then install University. Something might be wrong with the disk. If there isn't and you've cleaned the disk with rubbing alcohol, make sure you've backed up your games, try...
