    Rogers used to do the same thing, but we've been cutting down on the bureaucracy quite a bit lately. We still have systems in place to catch people for fraud if they were to just say they were dead to get out of paying their large debt to us (it happens...), but we decided since we can police it...

    This is illegal. The CRTC states that if a provider is told that a customer has an appointment with another provider, you are not allowed to offer any incentives to change their mind, or otherwise interfere with that appointment.

    But is Bell's retention department 24/7? If not, I think that's a pretty foolish system. "I know you're moving to China, and that the account holder recently died, but would a 20% discount persuade you to stay?" Heh.

    Even if they're moving out of the country? That seems kind of impractical. Is the retention department open 24/7? If not, why would Bell make customers call them back and go through a hassle if they're leaving the country with no chance to be "saved" as customers?

    One thing I will say about CRTC regulation regarding retention incentives: If you're trying to see what kind of deal they'll offer you as opposed to the competition, it's fine to say you're thinking about another company, but do not say you already have an appointment with another provider...
