My sons Dodge Stealth was low on oil and would no go in reverse also black smoke was coming from the exhaust. We put some oil in and now it goes in reverse. A mechanic at a local garage told me the engine was bad. Now sure I trust the guy. Any ideas?

My car brake lights don't work when i push the brakes pedal. However they do work with the hand brake. I have changed the brake light switch which is located behind the pedal.
