It means free - like when a magazine gives you a complimentary copy (spelled differently). Usually magazines will give out free copies so that prospective buyers can sample it and be enticed to buy future copies in the future.

AP courses are much more rigorous than regular classes, but this really depends on your teacher - how they teach, their grading scale and the amount of effort and time you put into it. Every class is different.
