Your friend and you are at the age when your bodies are going to start playing tricks on you. You will experience hormonal, physical and mental changes, and friends will come and go. It's nothing against you or him it's just life. Give him space and he'll come around.
I would start on something soft and chew only on the opposite side of your extractions, if it does bother you, you can try something else being sure not too hard as you still can pop a stitch and keep food away from the stitches to keep from getting them infected.

I'd have to see your recipe, and procedure in order to know,but, sometimes a little sugar can kinda blend all of the different spices together, and smooth things out. Don't give up.....hang in there.
There are many "survival" publications out there for sale. Or visit your local library. All the information cannot be put in one book, because there is simply too much information. Some of us grew up with a lot of this information because it was just a way of life back then. I'm in my mid 50's...
