I'm assuming the N71 has the familiar S60v3 e-mail app. You can read HTML e-mails with standard formatting preserved (color, bold, italics, font sizes), but you can only create and send mail in plain text.
+1 more to sticking with old firmware. Don't have big enough issues, and not enough reports of dramatic performance increase to justify updating for me.
Perhaps they were concerned that people might not be able to read the signs on-screen, due to the picture quality not being as good back then. Maybe not, it's just a guess. I suspect your "hang-over from radio days" theory might be true.
