sounds like fuel pump is getting weak and it's getting hared for it to overcome a slight vaporlock situation. Should clear up with a new pump.

It sounds to me like she's starving for gas. replace fuel line and clean in-tank filter. then let the line dribble into a cup and make sure it flows enough. check, clean, gap plug. be suspicious of that boiled carb, especially the seals and soft parts.

what about your simple tests? take out a spark plug and ground it, do you see a good spark when you crank the starter? Is the starter cranking as fast as usual? Did you fill up with diesel on accident? Is the gas any good? Has anything unusual happened lately? driven through deep water, crash, etc.

as long as you will be primarily in town it's great on gas. On the highway the fuel economy actually drops. I believe there's a company taking these things apart and putting bigger batteries and faster computers in them to try to get 100 mpg
